Description of Activity: This engaging day of professional development workshops and roundtables is designed to provide counselors working with students in transition with fresh ideas of how to creat a college-going culture as early as middle school using the time and resources already available.

Name of Activity: Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA)
Description of Activity: Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA), is an after school program that strives to increase the number of ethnic minority, low-income, and first-generation college-bound students who are eligible to enter a degree program at a university. As members of MESA, students from middle and high schools throughout Arizona participate in hands-on activities related to math, engineering, and science and college preparation workshops that help build strong academic skills and inform students about college and career opportunities. Students are invited to participate in local, state and national engineering design competitions.
Audience: Middle, High School Students and Parents
Restrictions: In the Southern Region of Arizona MESA services the following middle and high schools; Sunnyside Unified School District, Flowing Wells Unified School District and designated schools in the Amphitheater Unified School District and Tucson Unified School District. The MESA program targets minority, low-income and first-generation college-bound students.

Name of Activity: PSAT/SAT Preparation Workshops
Description of Activity: The Office of Early Academic Outreach has arranged to offer these workshops in order to help students familiarize themselves with both the PSAT and SAT exams using materials provided by the College Board. They are not designed to provide "shortcuts" or "tricks" for use on the exams. The workshop sessions consist of four Saturdays, includes two full practice tests, and will prepare students for both the PSAT and SAT tests. The practice test will assist students in identifying their strengths and weaknesses and give them valuable experience with the exam and its time constraints. Participants will also learn general test-taking techniques to successfully navigate the exam.
Audience: 8th grade, High School Students and Adult Students
PSAT and SAT Preparation Workshops are open to all students. However, Early Academic Outreach is interested in partnering with school districts composed of high populations of low-income, minority, and first-generation college bound students to increase these populations' preparedness for the PSAT and SAT.

Name of Activity: College Academy for Parents (CAP)
Description of Activity: College Academy for Parents (CAP) is a program designed to help elementary school parents formulate a strategy to prepare their children for a university education. An understanding of the benefits of a college education and the academic expectations for college preparation will help parents develop an involvement plan to guide their children toward college admission. CAP participants will increase their knowledge of admission processes and financial aid options so that they can proceed toward their goals with confidence.
Audience: K-5 Students and Parents
Qualifications: The College Academy for Parents is offered at no cost to parents at all of the Sunnyside Unified School District elementary schools .

Name of Activity: College Knowledge for Parents
Description of Activity: Strategically timed to occur just before the eighth grader registers for high school courses, this event will help parents prepare their student to confidently work toward fulfilling college requirements throughout the crucial high school years. This program guides families toward enhancing the combination of high school classes they take and grades they receive in order to assure their admission to the UA. The event discusses the cost of university attendance, types of financial aid, ways to find scholarships for college, and strategies to help students make a smooth transition from middle to high school.
Audience: 8th Grade Students and Parents
Restrictions: Parents of all eighth grade students in our partnership school districts: Amphitheater Public Schools, Flowing Wells Unified Schools, Nogales Unified Schools, Indian Oasis Unified Schools, Sahuarita Unfied Schools, Sunnyside Unified Schools and Tucson Unified Schools.

Name of Activity: Algebra Academy
Description of Activity: This program challenges incoming 9th grade students to learn Algebra while gaining 1.0 elective credit for high school. The student gains an understanding of algebraic concepts while engaging in hands-on, real world problems and activities. Most of the program occurs on the high school campus to prepare the student for a successful transition to the next level of education by introducing them to the campus, staff and resources. Students plan for college and explore future career opportunities to understand the importance of mathematics and academic achievement. Students also experience the transformation of becoming a Wildcat by coming onto The University of Arizona campus several times during the summer.
Audience: Freshmen
Restrictions: In 2008, incoming at Cholla, Desert View, Pueblo, Sunnyside and Tucson High Schools were served by the Algebra Academy. Targeted schools for 2009 are under consideration and pending funding.
