Name of Activity: Gaining Early Awareness & Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEARUP)

Description of Activity: A college readiness project which began in 2005 with sixth graders at 13 middle schools in the Sunnyside and Tucson unified school districts.

Description of Activity: Program geared toward helping students overcome barriers to self-sufficiency through career guidance, building self-esteem and developing employability skills.

Name of Activity: Upward Bound - East Campus

Description of Activity: Upward Bound provides fundamental support to participants in their preparation for college entrance. The program provides opportunities for participants to succeed in their precollege performance and ultimately in their higher education pursuits. Upward Bound serves: high school students from low-income families; high school students from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor's degree; and low-income, first-generation military veterans who are preparing to enter postsecondary education. The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of postsecondary education.  Upward Bound offers career and personal counseling, academic tutoring, opportunity for dual enrollment and college credit, summer prep program, Saturday Enrichment program, campus and occupational field trips, and financial stipends.    

Audience: 8th Graders, and High School Freshman and Sophmores.

Restrictions: Available to 9th and 10th grade students from participating high schools which include Santa Rita, Palo Verde, PPEP Tec Victor Soltero, and Tuson Accelerated High Schools. The total enrollment for the program is 50 students. APPLICATION DEADLINE IS September 5, 2008 FOR FALL PROGRAM (September 20 - December 6). 8th grade students only eligible for summer program after completing 8th grade and receiving completion documentation.
